Events 20th August 2018

CDE Research Engineers have had a great month with poster and paper successes. Simone Barbieri presented his research poster ‘3D Content Creation Exploiting 2D Character Animation’ at SIGGRAPH 2018 in Vancouver last week. 5 other CDE students, Catherine Taylor, Azeem Khan, Rory Clark, Kyle Reed and Valentin Miu also flew to Vancouver to attend SIGGRAPH 2018. We hope to hear all about it when they return.

We also heard that Marcia Saul has had a paper accepted at the 18th Annual UK Workshop on Computational Intelligence (UKCI 2018). Marcia will present her poster at the workshop at Nottingham Trent University in September.

Meanwhile, Asha Ward will be presenting a poster and demo of her work at the OHMI conference in September – enabling music for the physically disabled.

Good luck Marcia and Asha.

CDE Research Engineer Mark Mosely has 2 articles in the most recent edition of VECLife, Victoria Education Centre’s quarterly newsletter. You can read them at the link below on pages 22 and 31 respectively to hear all about the Inaugural Assisted Living Technology Symposium in May and his research trip in Canada to the Assistive Technology Labs at the University of Alberta and the I Can Center at Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton.

IEEE Games Special Interest Group, are looking for people to participate in their new international game programming competition event.

IEEE GameSIG has sponsored a very successful series of events in southern California for the last seven years. Now we’re expanding, with a worldwide challenge uniquely focused on ‘classic’ video games. This is a great puzzle for students and professionals alike: design a fun game with very limited resources. It’s a perfect lead-in to the complex sorts of challenges that developers will encounter in many real-world applications. They’ll have to focus on what matters most and do their best with the options that they’re given.

For this contest, the first step is to contact IEEE and request detailed contest rules and a copy of the submission form. We like to have a mentor at each institution to serve as a primary contact and offer advice and assistance, as needed, to the teams. The contest usually attracts a significant number of entries, which we will filter down to ten finalists, who will be invited to present their games live via video on the day of the event (no complicated travel required). We will help you make sure that the teams know what we’re looking for and how to make the best possible entries. Contact us today at:
