We are looking for proposals for any of the following:

This call is open to all CDE students, MSCA Fire Fellows and CDE Alumni.

To help increase the connections between the UK research base and the Catapults, Research Councils UK* (RCUK) is supporting the development of new collaborations through research visits/residencies for university (and other eligible research organisations) academics to spend time embedded within the Catapult teams.
Catapult Researchers in Residence (RiR) Awards will build connections, support pathways to impact and knowledge exchange between academia and the Catapult centres.As such, the Catapults have been awarded vouchers (assigned to the Catapults but paid directly to universities or other research organisations) to support a range of activities to accelerate the impact of Research Council (RC)-funded research and/or expand the capabilities of their centre.
This initiative aligns strongly with RCUKâs excellence with impact, through building stronger partnerships in the national innovation system and supporting the best environment for innovation.
The aim of the RiR initiative is to:
Â· Expand the capabilities and knowledge of the Catapults
Â· Nurturing talents and skills development of researchers and Catapult staff
Â· Create a cohort of RiRs able to share their experiences with a wider network of academics

The University of Manchester is running a new short course on SMOOTHED PARTICLE HYDRODYNAMICS (SPH) suitable for engineers and scientists on 10-11th April 2018. SPH is a rapidly developing meshless computational method ideal for applications of potentially highly violent fluid flows with very large deformation and arbitrarily complex moving boundaries.
This new 2-day course is intended for professionals and graduate students in areas of engineering fluid and solid mechanics including coastal and offshore hydrodynamics, flows for applications such as marine structures, fluid-structure interaction, sloshing, flooding, debris, slurry, multi-phase flows, manufacturing wave energy conversion, etc.
With world-leading experts from research and industry, this 2-day course on the SPH method will cover:
Â· basic SPH theory
Â· methodologies for modelling both fluids (weakly compressible and incompressible) and solids
Â· using high-performance computing (HPC) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to accelerate simulations
Â· a hands-on simulation session with the open-source DualSPHysics code for real applications
Â· industrial perspectives
Â· latest state-of-the-art developments and new paradigms for SPH.

EPSRC opens competition for Connected Nation Pioneers awards
A new awards competition, Connected Nation Pioneers, that will recognise exceptional UK doctoral students whose research contributes towards the development of a Connected Nation, is announced today by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
The competition is being sponsored by Dstl, Facebook, BT, Samsung, Huawei, Thales, Amazon and NVIDIA.
EPSRC’s Chief Executive, Professor Philip Nelson, said: The increasingly interconnected nature of our society is being driven by developments in science and engineering, these are creating new industries, opportunities and challenges.
Helping the UK to flourish as a Connected Nation is one of EPSRC’s four prosperity outcomes, and having the right skills base to achieve this is crucial. I am very pleased to announce the opening of this year’s Connected Nation Pioneers competition and look forward to seeing the presentations. Many of the entrants to our previous Pioneers competitions have gone on to succeed in academia, business and industry.
Applications from eligible students working in any area of EPSRC’s remit are welcome as long as they demonstrate they fit with the prize category descriptions.
Students do not have to be EPSRC-funded but do have to be registered at a UK institution.
The call will run over three stages. Firstly an expression of interest needs to be registered via the EPSRC website by 16:00 hours (BST), Thursday 26 April 2018.
The competition celebrates the transformative and pioneering research of UK-based doctoral students in contributing to up to two of the following category topics:
- Safe and Secure Cyber Society
- Intelligent Informatics
- Making Digital Technology Work for People
- Creative Computing for the Digital Economy
Applicants will be assessed per category by a panel of industrial sponsors in three stages:
- An Expression of Interest statement (500 words)
- A three minute video pitch
- An exhibition and pitch presentation
