Events 12th January 2017

Happy New Year to you all. Welcome back, we hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas Break. We thought it would be handy to remind you of some of the activities and events we have coming up. We are committed to making this year bigger and better than ever before and we need your support to achieve this.

Remember to get involved. Attending events and conferences is a great way to increase your public engagement experience, develop your personal and professional skills within industry and academically, get together with colleagues and receive additional training to support you on your journey through the EngD and beyond.

Here are a few little reminders and news of some new activities

This two-day conference (7th – 8th March 2017) combines the ‘Wearable Technology Show’, ‘Augmented Reality’, Digital Health and Smart Home. CDE will have a small stand at this event. We are looking for CDE students to help out on the stand. We are also looking for any demos you may have to help make the stand more interactive and showcase some of the outstanding research currently taking place within the centre.

It is a great public engagement opportunity combined with the opportunity to network with industry.

CDE would cover the costs of travel and accommodation where required. You do not need to commit to the two full days, but if you are able to join us for one day or even half a day, your support would be greatfully received. Email Zoe Leonard if you are interested in attending and helping on the CDE stand.

VR World Congress (11th – 13th April 2017) is a three day conference specifically for VR, which takes place in Bristol. The conference and expo is jam-packed with world-class speakers and exhibitors. CDE will be exhibiting once again this year, we are looking for CDE students to assist on the stand. If you have a demo that would help to attract visitors to the stand.

Once again this is a fantastic public engagement experience and an industrial networking opportunity. Email Anna Beeton if you are interested in attending and helping on the CDE stand.

Public Engagement Training

We have organised some joint Public Engagement Training with the other CDTs based at Bath.

This is a fantastic opportunity and we strongly recommend that you participate in the training. We have received really good feedback from others who have taken the courses, and it will also look great on your CV – especially if you go on to use it.

There are two training sessions, one is a ‘Designing a Creative Public Engagement Activity’ workshop and the other is a ‘Non-Academic Writing’ workshop.

The Creative Workshop Training – 15th February 2017 – 14:00 – 17:00 Rooms TBC

Non-Academic Writing – 22nd February 2017 – 14:00 – 16:00 Rooms TBC

Please let Anna Beeton know if you are interested in this and which one (or both) ASAP, as there are limited numbers as the training is shared across 3 CDTs.

The Festival of Learning

The Festival of Learning will take place at Bournemouth University, 8-12th July 2017. CDE will be taking part this year, we will showcase some of your research. This could be a poster or any interactive demos you may have. We welcome any event suggestions and ideas you have to bring this event to life. We have requested space for Saturday 8th July, the family day, so your display can be fun/interactive and could even showcase previous projects you have completed. We want to bring CDE to life and raise the profile of the centre and we need your help to achieve this. Email Zoe Leonard to confirm your participation.

The FOL, celebrating its 5th year, represents a wonderful celebration of learning, the Festival showcases BU’s research and expertise to a wide and varied audience, including local communities, staff, students, employers and alumni around the world.

Photos for the CDE Photo Gallery.

This is just one of the exciting new changes we are making to the CDE website. We plan to include a photo gallery within the student’s page so that we can showcase the life of the CDE student more visually. But…. we need your help. We need you to start sending in some pictures, anything that shows what you have been up to regarding your research, projects you may be involved with on your placement (with the agreement from your company) or conferences you’ve attended or presented at.
