This CDT in Embedded Intelligence (EI) is the first of its kind in Europe. Hosted at Loughborough University and partnered with Heriot-Watt University, the centre is focussed on delivery well-trained and commercially aware graduates in the areas of Engineering, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the Digital Economy. Building Animation From The Ground Up
Bait Studio/Cloth Cat Animation/Thud Media are an integrated animation, VFX and interactive company that uses systems from across each industry to streamline and organise production. In particular, we have artists working on a variety of productions at any one time, often across the three companies. This takes an incredible amount of co-ordination and it’s an ever-evolving process. Part of that is integrating our software into the pipeline so that we can track renders, versions and edits with ease. Beyond this, we are investigating games engines as a route to providing animation and interactive experiences for a new generation of media platforms. I’ll be showing how our systems have evolved over the past five years and what we will be doing in the future to give even more time to artists to create amazing stories.
Jon Rennie began his career in computer games, working at Bullfrog Productions on titles such as Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper and Populous: The Beginning. Since then, he has made a number of short films which have been shown nationally and internationally and started his own company in Cardiff to produce visual effects and animation for the film and broadcast industries. He is now Managing Director of Bait Studio (Motion Graphics and VFX), Cloth Cat Animation (Series Animation) and Thud Media (Games and Interactive).

Micro:bit workshop and Christmas Social
7th December 2016
9.30 am 12.30 pm followed by lunch in Bath.
Come and join us for an interactive workshop on Wednesday, 7th December in Bath followed by an opportunity to network with your fellow students.
The micro:bit is an open development board that allows you to run code on it and have access to all of the hardware. It has enabled debugging so that you can interrogate the system. You can use the BBC micro:bit for all sorts of cool creations, from robots to musical instruments – the possibilities are endless. This little device has an awful lot of features, like 25 red LED lights that can flash messages. Two programmable buttons can be used to control games or pause and skip songs on a playlist. The BBC micro:bit can detect motion and tell you which direction you’re heading in, and it can use a low energy Bluetooth connection to interact with other devices and the Internet.
The session will start at 9.30 am with a brief discussion about the Internet of Things and an introduction to the micro:bit (www.microbit.co.uk) then you’ll have the opportunity, in small groups, to work with the micro:bit to solve a problem on one of three themes: Use it to help teach or use it to alert or create a game.
The workshop will finish at 12.30 pm and be followed by lunch and a chance to catch up and network with your fellow CDE students.

The Digital Economy Network is looking to recruit a ‘Social Media Advocate’. This position is offered on a flexible basis, 30 days per year, but the candidate must be willing to travel across the DEN CDT Network. £26,052 – £38,153 per annum pro-rata depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance. Roles and responsibilities include developing and delivering training and events on social media use, developing a social media strategy for the Network, developing rich social content with showcases the activities of the Network, and providing online training resources and blogs to support doctoral students in the use of social media tools.
