Digital Yes: Unleash Your Ingenuity: Manchester, UK 30 November – 1 December 2015. This is an excellent opportunity for digital economy PhD students and early career researchers across the UK to increase their business acumen, entrepreneurial orientation and employability by exploring the commercialisation of their ideas. We are very pleased to announce that Dhana Frerichs, along with co-authors Andrew Vidler and Christos Gatzidis, will have a paper published in Elsevier’s Computers and Graphics Journal: “Computers & GraphicsVolume 52” in November 2015. The paper “A survey on object deformation and decomposition in computer graphics” is available to download now from the digital library, click here for further details.

IEEE Virtual Reality Best Dissertation Award – The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee and the IEEE VR Steering Committee are pleased to introduce a new annual award for the Best Dissertation in the broad field of Virtual and Augmented Reality.

One award will be given each year, and the recipient will receive a cash prize of $500 along with a free registration for the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference, where they will be invited to make a short presentation.

Deadline: December 31, 2015

Eligibility

All dissertations that have been successfully defended during the two calendar year period prior to the award deadline (e.g. January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2015 for the 2016 award) are eligible for consideration.

Submissions

Nomination materials should be sent by email to <[email protected]> and must include:

The title and abstract of the dissertation; The name of the candidate; The name of the candidate’s primary advisor; The name of the institution where the dissertation was defended; The date of the dissertation defence; A 1-2 page summary of the significance of the dissertation research, including references if applicable; An electronic copy of the full dissertation or a pointer to where it can be obtained One letter of recommendation, up to 1 page in length, ideally from the candidate’s primary advisor.

Evaluation

All nominations will be carefully reviewed by a committee of experts, selected by the IEEE VR Steering Committee. Factors that will be considered when choosing the winning entry include: the significance and impact of the technical contributions of the work, and the clarity with which these contributions are communicated.

As you may be aware, the Digital Economy conference is one of the main events of the Research Council UK Digital Economy programme. With its aim to rapidly realise the transformational impact of digital technologies on the economy and other aspects of society, the programme covers a broad range of technical fields. EPSRC-led RCUK Digital Economy Theme event this year will be in the revised form of a Research Impact Showcase that is taking place on Tuesday 8 December.

Interactive Technologies and Games Conference I<tag> is joining up with GameCity to bring you the ITAG15 Hackathon hosted at Nottingham Trent University. At the end of the challenge, participants will get the opportunity to demo their work at the UK’s National Video Game Arcade.

Taking part in several jam sites across the globe, the ITAG15 Hackathon invites game designers, artists and programmers to join us. We are challenging you to develop games or assistive technology that helps address and raise awareness of the problems surrounding health, education and disability in a little over 24 hours.

Bournemouth University has made it to the short list of the Times Higher Education Awards 2015, for ‘Outstanding Digital Innovation in Teaching or Research’. SHIVA project on interactive 3D modelling and 3D printing for disabled children, was a project that our very own Research Engineer Mark Moseley worked on before joining CDE. The NCCA is now seeking a Post-Doc Researcher to undertake an externally funded project, ‘Virtual Prototyping of New Lifeboat Launching Systems with Unmanned Vehicles to Enhance Safety’.
