CDE featured at international digital entertainment conference

Researchers from the Department of Computer Science, University of Bath, and the Centre for Digital Entertainment showcased and demonstrated current work at X¦Media¦Lab 2012. X Media Lab conferences bring together leading visionaries from across the world to discuss the latest thinking on the current digital entertainment landscape and the changes that are set to transform the industry. Mainly targeted at businesses, it creates an opportunity to present cutting-edge technologies, network, and get insight from global players and discuss opportunities for growth.

CDE had a presence at the X Media Lab Conference, the VIP reception and was involved with some of the many competitions during the week-long Bath Digital Festival. The XML directors visited us and met several academics, to discuss capabilities in digital entertainment. They invited Professor JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, Director of the Allosphere Research Facility, University of California over who gave presentations, hosted by CDE, at the University of Bath and in the City.

Joint Networking Event in Cambridge 16/02/12

David Walsh, MD of Frontier Developments, hosted a networking session for Cambridge-based companies interested in the CDE and our EngD programme.

After an introduction to current projects, an audience of 20 listened to Dave speaking about Frontier’s experiences of working with Universities, linking industry and academic research and hosting an EngD student. He explained well how the company has benefited from having an extra resource solely focussed on innovation without deterring current staff from their day-to-day work.

Virtual Trees a ‘game changer’ for New Scientist

This award celebrates the talent, commitment and knowledge of the University’s National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA). For the past 22 years, the NCCA, based in BU’s Media School, has been at the forefront of computer animation education and research in the UK, consistently blending art and design with mathematical and computer science. Mid-term Review

The EPSRC assess the performance of Doctoral Centres it has allocated resources to, the first major assessment being the Mid-term Review. We are very happy to report we have not only passed but been commended as an example of good practice. We would like to extend out thanks to the students, academic supervisors and industry partners who have all contributed greatly to the first few years of the CDE!

Explay 2011

CDE participated in the conference and game jam at Extended Play 2011 , the South West’s first digital interactive festival. Our students won a prize for ‘innovation’ at the game jam and we presented on CDE projects and programme.

The focus of the conference was bringing the South-West’s talented and diverse community of digital creatives together to share advice and support on how to grow. It was an excellent first event that CDE was proud to sponsor. Congratulations to Korash (iNets), Ella (Remode), Ben (Mutant Labs) and everyone else that made it so enjoyable. Looking forward to 2012.

CDE at Eurographics and Siggraph

This year we sent the first cohort of CDE students to either SIGGRAPH or Eurographics, gleaning ideas and intellectual stimulation for their research projects. They also benefited from the technical training courses offered. Both trips were a great success with students leaving overwhelmed but inspired!
